Track

Track cycling has a long history, with races organised on wooden tracks in England as early as the 1870s. The sport flourished in many countries around the world and was incredibly popular with the public. The first Track World Championships were held in Chicago in 1893 and a number of cycling events were established, from sprint races to endurance races and now even combined events.

The sides of the velodrome track are steeply banked at a frightening 42 degrees, which makes for fast and furious racing between competitors and allows the spectators to be very close to the action. The pure speed of the cyclists and the dramatic atmosphere inside the velodrome makes the Track Cycling World Championships one of the most exciting cycling sports to watch.

The UCI Track World Championships offer world class racing as the cyclists compete in a number of events ranging from the sprints, the pursuit, and time trails right through to the Keirin.

Keirin - Keirin cycle racing originated in Japan and remains one of Japan’s biggest betting sports. See riders sprint at speed in excess of 70km/h as they sprint for victory.

Kilo and 500m Time Trials – The riders start from a standing start and race the clock. After spending all of their energy on getting their speeds up, riders give it their all to maintain the cracking pace over the last lap.

Sprint – Riders start next to one another and race their opponents on a one-on-one basis.  Manoeuvres and tactics are in full flight as riders battle the mind to gain perfect position in this three lap race full of excitement.

Team Sprint - The most hectic and spectacular disciplines where teams of three riders drop down to one last sprinter battling for the gold.

Individual and Team Pursuit - Beginning on opposite sides of the track riders try to catch their rivals. This race makes for a good spectacle and is a true cat and mouse pursuit.

Scratch Race – All contestants start from scratch and then try to break away from the main field and cross the finishing line first, meanwhile their adversaries try to chase them down.
